Two Major Peterborough Projects Get Greenlit With £3.5m Funding

Peterborough City Council has announced that two major projects have been given the go ahead, following the allocation of £3.5m in funding from the Government’s Towns Fund.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) approved proposals for a new Activity Centre at Ferry Meadows and a Green Technology Centre at Peterborough College.

As such, the Government department has agreed to provide £3.5m in funding to bring the two projects to fruition.

The Ferry Meadows Activity Centre will feature an Olympic-standard climbing facility – one of the largest of its kind in the UK.

Visitors will also get to enjoy a nature-themed toddler area, a cafe and hirable spaces perfect for local community groups – all within the picturesque grounds of Peterborough’s most well-known country park. Construction of the main building is expected to begin next year.

Meanwhile, the Green Technology Centre will allow the college to offer an entirely new curriculum to prepare students for careers in green technology, like electric car manufacturing and sustainable construction.

Courses are expected to begin running in 2024, with construction of the building beginning next year.

Matthew Bradbury, independent chair for the Towns Fund Board in Peterborough, said: “This is just the latest success for Peterborough in securing Government Towns Fund cash.

“The Government has stipulated that it wants the money to be spent on projects which deliver long-term economic and productivity growth for towns and cities in England and Wales. Both the Activity Centre and Green Technology Centre can deliver on both counts.

“The Activity Centre will create jobs, encourage visitors to travel and spend money in our city and provide an important asset for our own residents to use.

“The Green Technology Centre will train residents in skills that are in-demand by Peterborough employers and in industries that are future-proofed – helping to boost the city’s economy for years to come. It will do this by working with local employers to deliver a curriculum that ensures those leaving the college have exactly what employers are looking for.”
